Not all college degrees are created equal. If you spend your time and money earning any degree, you want to know that the degree will be recognized by your employer and colleges you may attend later in life. It is for that reason that you should know the importance of accredited versus non-accredited online degrees and which one you should choose to pursue.

For those who covet higher pay, the best job titles, and the most responsibility, a Master’s degree is often required. Knowing this, some businesses have begun offering degrees in less time than would normally be necessary. These opportunities to receive an online college degree often are not legal. Be very wary of any business offering college degrees ‘quick and easy’.

In order to advance in your career, your employer may suggest going back to school. That’s well within their rights, and probably a good step for you to consider. However, if you expect them to recognize the additional degree, it will have to come from an accredited school. Non-accredited schools will be overlooked, in most cases, so you’re better off not attempting to get a degree from that type of school.

Ask your manager or HR whether the company helps cover costs of tuition. You might also want to ask if they will accept a degree that you learn online since you will be able to continue to work and go to school at the same time.

Getting a Bachelor’s degree, or higher, has never been easier. In fact, you can get your nursing degree without ever having to step foot inside a classroom or onto a college or university campus. You will want to ensure that any degree program you choose is accredited so that it will be recognized by your current employer, any future employer, or any future school may choose to attend.

In the eyes of most schools or employers, if the course of study you chose is accredited, it won’t make a difference how the degree is obtained. However, you will want to verify this with your own employer.

The National Education Association is one the governing bodies determining whether a school is accredited or not, and all schools will get their accreditation through one of these in order to be considered a valid school. They must meet the standards as determined by the state or federal government. If the school itself, or the program being considered, isn’t accredited, that prospective student would be wise to consider another school or course of study.

Accredited colleges and universities abound, so there’s no sense in taking chances on your degree not being recognized. And, college degrees online are much more readily available than in previous years. Don’t take a chance, search out the online degree program that will both meet your scheduling, financial, and online learning needs.

There are many resources on the Internet pertaining to distance learning programs. Check out several schools, their admission requirements, the available online degree programs, their accreditation status, and all costs associated with attendance. Ask whether student financial aid is available.

Try to understand the advantages and disadvantages of earning your degree online. You can attend an accredited college or university, obtain the degree you want from any college in the country, and do it all in a way that will meet your scheduling needs. You’re not limited to attending classes at a particular time, because online courses are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It’s even possible to receive college financial aid to help pay the bills.

Make sure, however, when you do enroll that you choose a course of study, degree, and educational institution that are accredited. You will save yourself time, effort, and money in the long-run by choosing an accredited school to begin with.

The Project Triangle is a useful way of envisioning project management when working project management jobs. What the heck is it? Well, draw a triangle, and then at one point write “cheap”, at another write “fast” and at the third point write “good”. The main theory of the Project Triangle is that you can only have two of the three things at any given time. In other words, you can’t have something done in a way that’s good, fast, AND cheap- you have to optimize for the best outcome for any 2 of the three points.

Another useful device, the Project Management Triangle, uses a similar layout but instead attempts to define the relationship between scope, cost and schedule in addition to quality. A project manager estimates how long a project will take by breaking down the overall project into individual tasks called “deliverables”. The project manager has no control over “time expended”, therefore, time is not considered a resource for the purposes of accounting.
Cost of a project depends on several variables including cost of resources such as labor, materials, machines and equipment- and the always intangible “worker skill and productivity”- especially important when temporary or contract employees are used.
The scope of a project can be define as “how do we define this project as ‘finished’?”. In other words, it’s a specific description of what the end result is supposed to be. Quality is a major component of scope, and the amount of time put into each individual task determines overall quality- over the course of a large project, quality can have a large impact on time and/or cost, and the reverse is true as well.

The first thing one must do in order to market their degree is to define it. If someone graduates with a degree in business management, then market yourself towards business but be open-minded to various possibilities. This may sound elementary, but often people undervalue their profitability in the workforce. Think of all the types of businesses available, every single one of them needs someone with your expertise. While many will pick up their local classifieds and search for jobs, if the category is empty they will look for other work. Don’t settle. By marketing your degree you can land a job in the field you’ve been trained in. Specialized employees make more than those without one. Think in terms of the airline business. Let everyone know you have a unique degree and show them what you’ve learned. Often on job applications a section will have a title such as “industry specific training” or “special certification” this is where you want to begin. Enter in your degree and be sure to mention it in the interview as well. Don’t be afraid to show people what you have learned in your program.

Build upon experience so that you can become more marketable. Make your best effort every time you leave a job to get a new one that entails more responsibility, or allows you to experience more than your last job. This will help you build your experiences to make you more marketable to businesses and companies.

Most companies hire web designers on the basis of their display portfolio of previous websites and designs they have completed. So it is really important that you have some “real world” experience to show, even if it involves only personal or volunteer projects for schools or community organizations.

Career advancement for web designers involves moving up in seniority in the design arena or progressing in the marketing/communications department of a firm, according to what skills they have and what they are most interested in.

Web designers should not be confused with web developers - they have different skills. Developers work on the server side of websites with programming languages like PHP, Java, and JSP, while designers usually don’t do much coding. In general, the web designer comes up with how they want a site to look and then work with the developer, who figures out how to make the “look” into a functional website by creating the code that operates behind the scenes.

Becoming a Web Designer

Web designers are responsible for creating and designing the pages that constitute a website. They must know how to balance the way a page looks with how it functions. Another important consideration for web designers is accessibility, or how to make a website work regardless of what device a visitor uses to view it or interact with it. Accessibility refers particularly to making pages functional for people with disabilities.

While many web designers usually have a B.S. in Computer Science or a B.A. related to marketing, such as business administration from a four-year institute, others have completed two-year programs at community colleges, or they have taught themselves independently by learning the design skills and programming languages necessary to create pleasing and useful online pages.

The two most common ways to become a professional web designer include getting formal training or teaching yourself. Formal training can be obtained through a certificate program or an advanced degree program available at community colleges, universities, or online. Getting practical experience by actually building pages is critical before you apply for a job as a web designer. Self-taught web designers often begin working for a company in another capacity, such as marketing or administration, and then take on web design responsibilities over time and as needed by the employer. “Filling in” as a web designer for an employer frequently leads to a full-time job in this area.

Colleges and universities now offer specific courses of study that lead to a college-level degree in games programming. While few schools are currently accredited to offer such programs, more are becoming accredited all the time, and many institutions are adding games programming to their computer science programs. The growth in computer game degrees reflects the growth of the games industry itself.

Career advancement and salary in the games programming sector varies according to the game development specialty involved. In 2007, the average salary for a games programmer in the U.S. had reached $83,383 per year. This is comparable to compensation in the business sector, in spite of the fact that games programming is more difficult and time-consuming than the typical mainstream coding performed in the business arena.

Beginning games programmers – those with less than three years of experience – generally receive an average of $57,665 per year, while those with more than six years in the field are paid an average of $94,525 annually. Lead programmers receive the highest pay, but 3D-graphics programmers are paid a comparable amount. In 2007, lead programmers earned an average of $103,409 per year.
